Multi-decadal monsoon characteristics and glacier response in High Mountain Asia

چکیده
Abstract Glacier health across High Mountain Asia (HMA) is highly heterogeneous and strongly governed by regional climate, which variably influenced monsoon dynamics the westerlies. We explore four decades of glacier energy mass balance at three climatically distinct sites HMA utilising a detailed land surface model driven bias-corrected Weather Research Forecasting meteorological forcing. All glaciers have experienced long-term losses (ranging from −0.04 ± 0.09 to −0.59 0.20 m w.e. −1 ) consistent with widespread warming region. However, complex contrasting responses patterns Indian Summer Monsoon were evident, largely role snowfall timing, amount phase. A later onset generates less total in southeastern Tibetan Plateau during May–June, augmenting net shortwave radiation affecting annual (−0.5 on average compared early years). Conversely, timing monsoon’s arrival has limited impact for Nepalese Himalaya more temperature core season. In arid central Plateau, results 40 mm (58%) increase May–June years, likely greater interaction westerly storm events. Meanwhile, late cessation this site sees an 200 (192%) summer precipitation due monsoonal storms. trend towards weaker intensity conditions recent decades, combined patterns, produced predominantly negative balances all (up 1 loss strong years) but sub-regional variability can additionally complicate response.

Glacier shrinkage across High Mountain Asia
An assessment of glacier shrinkage (reduction of area) for all of HighMountain Asia requires a complete compilation of measured rates of change and also a methodology for objective comparison of rates. I present a compilation from 155 publications reporting glacier area changes, and also a methodology that overcomes the main obstacles hindering comparison. Glacier areas are not always assigned ...
متن کاملMulti-decadal reduction in glacier velocities and mechanisms driving deceleration at polythermal White Glacier, Arctic Canada
Annual and seasonal surface velocities measured continuously from 1960 to 1970 at White Glacier, a 14 km long polythermal valley glacier spanning∼100–1800 m a.s.l., provide the most comprehensive early record of ice dynamics in the Canadian Arctic. Through comparison with differential GPSderived velocity data spanning 2012–16, we find reductions in mean annual velocity by 31 and 38% at lower el...
متن کاملA spatially resolved estimate of High Mountain Asia glacier mass balances, 2000-2016
High Mountain Asia hosts the largest glacier concentration outside the polar regions. These glaciers are important contributors to streamflow in one of the most populated areas of the world. Past studies have used methods that can only provide regionally-averaged glacier mass balances to assess the High Mountain Asia glacier contribution to rivers and sea level rise. Here we compute the mass ba...
